    The Midway State

With guests The Artist Life and The Envy

    http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=166858576640

Behind almost every overnight success story is an untold tale of toil. Yes, the chart-storming, inked-up lads of Stereos seem to have come out of nowhere with their smash “Summer Girl.” But singer Pat, lead guitarist Miles, rhythm guitarist Robby, bassist Daniel and drummer Aaron, spent a good half-decade hunkered down — writing songs in basements, doing time in other bands and working McJobs before a twist of fate and MuchMusic turned them into “instant” pop stars. Besting 700 rivals on disBand was just a prologue to them besting 700,000 rivals on iTunes, where their now-platinum first single went straight to number one. It’s been a rapid six-month rise for Stereos, from playing in front of three people to rocking out before 10,000 –but consider that the first chapter. Touring to support the fall release of their debut album is where we’ll get into the meat of Stereos’ story.

“I really want to write on a human level that everyone can relate to, and just be honest.”

The Midway State comes at you from out of nowhere. The band’s nakedly emotional, piano-driven songs bear no clear connection to any current sound or scene. Even within the confines of a four-song EP,singer and songwriter Nathan Ferraro, drummer Daenen Bramberger, guitarist Michael Wise and bassist Michael Kirsh take you on a journey where you just don’t know where the emotional undertow is going to pull you next. All you know is that eventually, the combination of youthful drama and mature melodies will tug you under.

Described in Exclaim! as “one of the year’s finest contributions to Canada’s melodic punk community”, The Artist Life’s “Let’s Start A Riot” has gained widespread media acclaim for its catchy hooks, lyrical optimism and fist-pumping anthems.

After releasing 2 full lengths and Touring all over the world with Crowned King, Shaun Frank relocated from Vancouver to Toronto to start The Envy. Their EP title track, ‘Don’t Let Go’ grabbed the attention of Grammy nominated music video director Frank Borin (Eminem, Good Charlotte, and many others) so much so that he waived his director¹s fee and shot the video out of genuine appreciation for their work. The future is looking bright for this talented and driven young band.

Join Stereos, The Midway State and guests The Artist Life and The Envy at the roxy in Thunder Bay, for an all ages/licensed concert Dec 16thl!

    HOLY ROLLERS

Priestess. Now there’s a heavy name.

You’ve got an image in your head, and it’s mistaken. You’ve heard the name Priestess, and you’re juggling impressions. Are they Goths, prancing around the pentangle in their Lugosi capes? I think not. Could this be…Christian rock? God, no. Just another gang of suburban riff-clowns raised on a sallow junk-food diet of hair bands? None of the above. Cue up the Montreal band’s debut, Hello Master, and let us demystify. Metal? No …Priestess is Heavy Mettle… And they do inspire devotion.

“It feels like we hit it off with people who wanna hear a heavy rock group with catchy songs,” says singer/guitarist Mikey Heppner. And, hello …master of understatement. Heppner’s a bantam dynamo whose unaffected approach is the face of a like-minded band. No stylist, no shtick, no pose – without gimmick, they fire maddeningly memorable and crunching hooks out to an audience that travels under no banner.

“Ordinary kids,” says Heppner. That sliver of rock fans somewhere between the hard rock, garage and indie tribes - you know, that 70% sliver. Priestess finds a commonality between those nerds, jocks, stoners, loners, party kids and hipsters for whom rock n’roll is somewhere between soundtrack and salvation.

Formed in Montreal in 2003 with a desire to rewire a balls-out ‘70s rock ethic with classicist songwriting, they defiantly refused to equate heavy music with the Big Downer. “Some bands are gloomy – because that’s the only way to be cool.”

Here’s the other way: rejoicing in heaviosity, with the accent on both ends. In their time as rock n’roll redeemers, Priestess has run through everything from the Beatles to prog to punk to Nirvana and back to AC/DC. “One of the hardest things to do is take a major-chord chorus and make it cool and heavy,” Heppner says. “AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long is in a major-chord - super-happy key. But it’s unstoppable and I can listen to it every day…forever.”

In the lean and punishing I Am the Night, Color Me Black, in the canyon-sized Talk To Her, the snarling Lay Down and an instant classic called Two Kids, they have already written four chapters in their own new testament.

“There is a level that we… must get to,” Heppner says of the band’s live show. Anyone who’s heard Heppner’s opening shout “We are Priestess and we are going to fuck you!” knows what that means. It’s no surprise that they caught the attention of Motorhead, opening for them on their last tour …Lemmy practically wrote the book on fucking the crowd up. Then, three triumphant shows at SXSW ’06 capped a “crushingly great” 6 1/2 week tour with fellow crushers Early Man and The Sword that found the band breaking out of major markets into places like Buffalo – where ordinary kids who couldn’t care less about the Montreal resurgence were moved to seize Heppner from the stage and send him crowd-surfing, mid-solo. They were believers.’

So back to that name: “The minute we tossed it out there, we knew it was perfect.”

Why? Think about it. Rather than playing to a herd of headbangers hurling themselves at the stage while their girlfriends cower at tables in the dark corners, Priestess wants to cross the most elemental human divide: gender. “Zeppelin sort of had a mystical pagan allure in the context of heavy, distorted guitars,” Heppner says. He finds in that a balance of undeniable masculine heft and feminine melody. “We get a lot of girls in the crowd. That’s very important.”

    It’s more than a manifesto. It’s a creed—

They are Priestess. The cult starts here.

THE TREWS DECLARE OCTOBER 6 AS DATE

    FOR FRIENDS AND TOTAL STRANGERS

Live Acoustic CD/DVD Releases and Cross-Canada Tour

SPEND AN EVENING WITH THE TREWS LIVE  @  THE ROXY IN THUNDER BAY, DEC 5TH, 2009

    SEE POSTER FOR MORE DETAILS

(TORONTO, ON – 15 SEPTEMBER 2009) – The Trews, perhaps most commonly known as a hard rock band, today announced the release of Friends & Total Strangers, a CD/DVD release which showcases their acoustic side. Recorded live from acoustic shows they performed at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Theatre in early 2009, Friends & Total Strangers will be released on October 6 in both audio and video formats. In the spirit of celebrating their less-electrified but no less electrifying set, they will also embark on a cross-Canada tour in November and December.

Friends & Total Strangers features previously unreleased songs, some of which were left out of previous releases, some of which are brand-new, such as the first single “Sing Your Heart Out”, and even an unexpected cover in the form of Joe Tex’s “The Love You Save” –the side-effect of viewing Death Proof on the tour bus. There are no overdubs or post-production ‘fixes’ in the audio and F&TS comes just as it was in house on the night. The DVD also includes behind-the-scenes footage, videos from No Time For Later, archival footage from touring and studio over the years, and is presented in 5.1 Surround Sound.

The Trews are surely known as a hard-rocking Canadian band but an indie music junket to Japan in 2008 resulted in an acoustic set at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo. It was so well received that the band was convinced they should embark on similar concerts on home turf. John-Angus MacDonald explains, “we thought that it was different enough from what we do to merit its own 90-minute performance. A lot of these songs are strummed on acoustic guitars first anyway. It’s where they’ve come from.” Brother Colin MacDonald expands further: “we’ve always had this other side of us, which is three acoustic guitars and a hand drum. We used to busk in this way and people would stop to listen to the harmonies. It shines a different light on the band; it’s not just the loud, in-your-face bar rock. I don’t think there are a lot of bands out there who do the harmony thing, outside of pop groups.”Defying convention, defining remarkable… Experience The Trews as a friend or total stranger this fall.
